ELECTROLYTES ≠ RECOVERY
COACHES CORNER: ELECTROLYTES ≠ RECOVERY:
One of the biggest misconceptions in endurance running is that taking electrolytes automatically means you have recovered. Not quite. After a hard or long run, your body has several recovery jobs:
1)Fluid : replace what you lost through sweat. 2)Sodium/electrolytes ; particularly important after heavy sweating, hot-weather training or very long sessions. 3) Carbohydrates : restore muscle glycogen and prepare you for the next workout. 4) Protein :provides amino acids needed for muscle repair and adaptation. This is why a recovery drink containing carbohydrate + protein + fluid can sometimes be more useful immediately after demanding training than an electrolyte-only drink. For marathoners doing high mileage, long runs or double-session training, recovery nutrition is not an afterthought it is part of the training programme. And remember: Hydration is not the same as recovery.
The best recovery strategy depends on how long you trained, how hard you trained, how much you sweated, the weather, and how soon you need to train again.
Train hard. Recover scientifically. Perform better. STAY HARD. #CoachesCorner #MarathonTraining #EnduranceRunning #SportsNutrition #Recovery #Electrolytes #Marathoner #RunningScience #RunSmart
