MORE MILEAGE DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN MORE FITNESS

COACHES CORNER:
MORE MILEAGE DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN MORE FITNESS: One of the biggest mistakes runners make is believing that adding more kilometres will automatically make them faster.
Training creates the stimulus. Recovery creates the adaptation. You can increase mileage, add hard sessions, doubles and strength training, but if your body cannot absorb the workload, performance can actually decline.
A good training programme should balance:
- Mileage :enough to build aerobic capacity and durability.
- Quality : threshold, marathon pace, intervals and hills.
- Easy running : genuinely easy enough to support recovery.
- Strength : improving resilience and running efficiency.
- Recovery :sleep, nutrition and easier days.
-Progression : increasing workload gradually rather than suddenly. For experienced marathoners, higher mileage can be extremely effective ,but high mileage only works when you can consistently recover from it.
The question is not:
“How many kilometres can I run?”
The better question is:
“What is the highest training load I can consistently absorb, recover from and adapt to?” Remember: You don't become fitter during the workout. You become fitter when your body adapts to the workout.
Train smart. Recover well. Adapt. Improve.
