Summiting MT Kenya in a day? This is how it went!

At 4:00 AM, Old Moses Camp is still asleep. The mountain breathes in long, cold sighs. Stars hang low, close enough to touch. My headlamp flicks on — a small rebellion against the darkness — and suddenly the journey has begun.

Every step away from camp feels like stepping off the world.

The trail to Shipton’s is not friendly at this hour. It climbs. It refuses. It asks questions my legs are not yet ready to answer.

lungs burn. calves tighten. The cold gnaws through gloves and jackets. But inside, something hotter wakes up — that stubborn Kenyan fire that says: “We keep moving.”

By the time dawn breaks, I am already high, floating between earth and sky. Mount Kenya reveals itself in layers — jagged rock, silver mist, glowing glaciers. The mountain is no longer sleeping. It is watching me.

And then comes the real test.

The push to Point Lenana.

Here, the air is thin and every breath feels borrowed. Heartbeat hammers like a drum in my ears. Legs feel heavy — not tired, but ancient, as if carrying the weight of everyone who has ever tried this climb.

There is no room for doubt here. Only one rule: One step. One breath. Repeat.

When i finally crest the summit, the world changes.

The sun rises over Africa, spilling gold across the plains. Below me: clouds like oceans. Above me: nothing but sky.

For a few perfect minutes, I am not just a hiker. I am a conqueror of gravity. A visitor to the roof of Kenya.

But the mountain is not finished with me.

Now comes the descent.

Past midday the snow fall is brutal. knees scream. Feet ache. Every downhill step shakes muscles already emptied by the climb.

I am exhausted — yet strangely alive.

By evening, when I finally stagger back into base camp, dusty, sore, smiling… I realize something powerful:

I didn’t just climb Mount Kenya. I earned it.

And that,is why this madness keeps calling me back. Because somewhere between pain and wonder, between darkness and sunrise… I find out exactly who I am 🏔️🔥
