Stack & Drop-Know your running shoe.

Stack is different from drop.

Stack is general thickness while drop is more of the gradual decrease in stack from the heel to the toe.

What is the effect of drop on Impact points?

In running shoes, "drop" refers to the difference in height between the heel and the toe. It's measured in millimeters and can affect how your foot strikes the ground.

A lower drop (e.g., 0-4mm) promotes a more natural running style, encouraging a mid foot or forefoot strike. This can help reduce the impact on your joints and potentially improve your running efficiency.

A higher drop (e.g., 10mm or more) provides more cushioning and support, often preferred by runners with heel-striking habits or those who need extra comfort.

Some common types of drop include:

  • Zero drop (0mm): Equal height in heel and toe
  • Low drop (0-4mm): Minimal difference in height
  • Moderate drop (4-8mm): Balanced cushioning and support
  • High drop (8mm+): More pronounced heel-to-toe offset

The right drop for you depends on your running style, foot strike, and personal preferences.

Some runners prefer a lower drop for a more natural feel, while others prefer a higher drop for added comfort and support.

Lower drop transfers the load to the ankle while higher drop transfers the load to the knee.

But an ideal training program may call for a shoe rotation regime with different drop sizes.
