Lactate: The Most Misunderstood Molecule in Endurance Sports. For decades, runners feared lactate. We blamed it for burning legs, fatigue, and poor performance. Today, sports science tells a completely different story. Lactate is not your enemy,it is one of your body's most valuable fuels. This is why we're now seeing elite cyclists and endurance athletes experimenting with lactate supplements during competition. But what's the science behind it? During hard running, your muscles rapidly break down carbohydrates to produce energy. As intensity rises, lactate is produced not because your muscles are failing, but because your body is working efficiently to keep energy production high. Here's the fascinating part: lactate doesn't simply accumulate. Through the Lactate Shuttle, it is transported to other muscles, the heart, and even the brain, where it is burned as fuel. In other words, your body is constantly recycling lactate into usable energy. This changes everything. The goal of endurance training isn't to avoid producing lactate,it's to become better at using it. That's why elite runners spend countless hours developing their aerobic system through:

  • Easy mileage.
  • LT1 training.

-Threshold (LT2) workouts. -VO₂max sessions.

  • Long runs.

These adaptations increase mitochondrial density, improve capillary networks, and enhance the muscles' ability to transport and oxidize lactate. The result? They can sustain faster paces for longer with greater efficiency.

So, what about lactate gels?

Early research suggests they may provide an additional energy source, spare glycogen, and potentially support repeated high-intensity efforts. However, the evidence is still emerging, and there is currently no strong proof that they significantly improve marathon performance on their own.

The biggest performance gains will always come from consistent, well-structured training, not the latest supplement. Remember, supplements may offer a small advantage at the highest level, but they cannot replace years of physiological adaptation.

Your body is already an incredible lactate-recycling machine. Your job is to train it to become even more efficient.
